Q & A for auto movers
• How will my car be shipped?
The first point to note here is that your car is not the only one shipped by your auto shipping company. The usual transport used for carrying cars is 8 or 10 car haulers. You have seen these huge vehicles which are used to bring new cars to the dealers’ showrooms. They are usually 80 ft long and about 14 ft in height. Because of its size, they have restricted maneuverability and may not be able to reach your doorstep. They are disallowed on many main roads and can not enter residential neighborhoods.
• I have heard of enclosed and open carriers in auto shipping. What are they?
The meanings of these words are evident from their names. The open carrier is a truck that is open and does not have a cover. It can carry 14 cars at the same time. Cars traveling in open carriers understandably are subject to weather conditions. There are people who do not prefer open carriers and select ‘enclosed’ carriers for shipping their vehicles. The enclosed carriers are closed on all sides and ensure protection from any untoward weather or a natural hazard during transit. These carriers are more expensive than open carriers. Though expensive, it is advisable to send your car in enclosed carriers for protection from the weather. Especially if you are transporting a vintage or a very expensive limo, it is wise to choose an enclosed carrier for the shipment.
• What about car insurance during transit?
Though the facility varies from one company to the other, all reputed auto shipping companies will offer insurance cover for the car and provide you with a Certificate of Insurance. The decision of taking additional insurance coverage is entirely up to you. Some people prefer to take extra insurance coverage for protection against dents, scratches, etc which might occur during transit. Since no personal belongings are allowed inside the car, while it is being transshipped, you can not insurance any personal goods in the car. In fact it is a legal offence to carry personal items in the car while it is being relocated. Remember to remove all personal belongings from the car like the boot, the glove compartment, etc when you give away your car for shipment. It is also possible that your own home insurance company may extend its coverage for the car during relocation. so it is better to check with your insurance company, before you decide on the insurance of the vehicle during transit.
• How are the payments scheduled for car shipping?
For shipping any vehicle long distance, you first have to enter into an agreement with the auto shipping company. Prior to signing of the agreement, the company might ask you to make an advance payment of a certain percentage of the total cost of the shipment. The balance is required to be paid upon the car’s arrival at the scheduled destination. Most reputed auto shipping companies accept credit cards, cashier checks or money order. The best option for you to do is to ask the auto shipping company what payment modalities are operational in that particular company. Remember not to deal with any auto shipping company who demand a cash advance from you
